Gunmen Open Fire on Tourists in Baisaran Meadow

The Pahalgam attack unfolded around 3 PM, as gunmen opened fire on unsuspecting tourists. Eyewitnesses reported hearing sudden gunshots, followed by widespread panic. Victims included an Indian Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau agent.
According to survivors, the attackers interrogated people before shooting. One woman told PTI her husband was shot in the head, and several others were injured nearby.
TRF Claims Responsibility for Pahalgam Attack
The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a front for the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror strike. Security forces—including the Army, CRPF, and local police—launched an intense manhunt.
Helicopters evacuated the wounded from the difficult terrain, while locals used ponies to carry the injured down to Pahalgam.
Government Responds Swiftly to the Pahalgam Attack
The Jammu and Kashmir administration activated emergency control rooms in Srinagar and Anantnag. Airlines waived fees and arranged additional flights to assist families of victims.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his Saudi Arabia and returned immediately. At Delhi airport, he convened a high-level security meeting.
“I strongly condemn the Pahalgam attack. India stands united against terrorism. Justice will be served,” PM Modi declared.
Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar that evening. On Wednesday, he visited the Police Control Room for a wreath-laying ceremony and planned to assess the ground situation in Pahalgam.
International Reactions Pour In
Global leaders expressed solidarity with India. US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni extended condolences and condemned the violence.
A Pattern of Targeted Attacks in the Region
This Pahalgam attack is among the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama bombing. Historically, the region has faced several strikes targeting civilians:
- 2000: 30+ killed at Amarnath base camp
- 2001, 13 pilgrims died near Sheshnag
- 2002: 11 victims in another targeted strike
- 2000 (Chhattisinghpora): 35 Sikhs were gunned down during US President Bill Clinton’s visit
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called this “the worst civilian attack in years” and condemned the attackers as “inhuman.”
Ongoing Operation in Baramulla After Infiltration Attempt
On the same day, a separate incident unfolded in Baramulla. Army personnel intercepted terrorists attempting to cross the Line of Control at Uri Nala. A firefight broke out, resulting in the deaths of two militants.
The Chinar Corps posted, “Weapons and war-like stores were recovered. Operation ongoing.”
Nation Stands United After Pahalgam Attack
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha assured that the attackers will pay “a heavy price.” He added, “The nation mourns this loss, and our forces are determined to bring justice.”
Conclusion: The Resolve Against Terrorism
The Pahalgam attack is a grim reminder of the challenges facing national security. Yet, the swift response from the government and unity shown by citizens reaffirms India’s commitment to combating terror.
